Crown Lengthening

In cases where there isn’t enough surface of the tooth visible, our highly trained and skilful team here at East Village Dental can perform crown lengthening.

What is crown lengthening?

Crown lengthening is used to extend the surface of the tooth.

Why do I need crown lengthening?

Crown lengthening can be necessary in order to safely apply another restoration or treatment such as a crown, bridge, or implant. Crown lengthening can also be used to address what is sometimes referred to as a ‘gummy’ smile. This is when there is more of the gum on display than normal.

What is the treatment process like?

Although this treatment can usually be carried out during just one appointment, it is one that requires great skill from our dental team here at East Village Dental. A local anaesthetic will be administered, so you don’t feel anything while it’s happening and then the gum will be shaped and contoured. This is usually done using a laser and will result with more of the natural surface of the tooth being visible. In some situations, part of the bone may also need to be shaved.

What is the after-care like?

Your dental team will of course go through all your after-care needs both before you have your treatment, and after. It’s worth noting that it can take up to two days for the area to fully heal, and we recommend avoiding hot food and drinks, as well as chewy and spicy food for 72 hours.
You should also avoid flossing for the same period of time. You might experience some pain in the area once the anaesthetic has worn off. This is to be expected and can be treated with an over-the-counter painkiller such as ibuprofen or paracetamol.

Very nice clinic. Facilities look clean and modern, and the operation of three teeth extraction was done in just a couple of minutes. The dentist was really good and obviously very experienced. Just had my second appointment and I cannot recommend this practice enough. From the receptionist (all are kind but Grace especially was so helpful) getting me my initial appointment during a busy period to Dr Leah who did my filling for me.
