Fillings are a commonly used treatment to help repair a tooth that has been damaged due to decay or injury.
Fillings are used to fill a cavity in a tooth that is usually the result of tooth decay, but can also be caused by injury, trauma, or even simple wear and tear.
As mentioned, we’ll recommend a filling to help repair a cavity that has formed in the tooth or teeth. If you have a cavity you might be experiencing extra sensitivity, or even pain – especially when chewing or biting down. The application of a filling will address any pain you may be having, as well as help restore and fortify the tooth, stopping the cavity from getting any bigger.
Fillings can be made of a variety of materials, but the most commonly used are amalgam, and composite resin. Amalgam fillings are the more traditional looking fillings, which leave behind a silvery appearance in the mouth. Composite resin fillings have a tooth-coloured appearance which is much more subtle and natural looking.
When receiving your filling, we’ll first administer local anaesthetic so the area being treated is completely numbed. We’ll then remove the damaged or decayed parts of the tooth, exposing the cavity.
Next, we’ll thoroughly prepare and disinfect the cavity before applying the filling material. Both composite resin and amalgam set very quickly, and we’ll soon be able to smooth out and shape the filling, making sure your bite is comfortable and correct.Back to General Dentistry
