At East Village Dental, we can use inlays and onlays to help restore and strengthen teeth that have become damaged.
An inlay works in a similar way to a filling and is used to fill in the centre of a tooth that may have become damaged as a result of decay, injury, or trauma. Not only do inlays help repair the tooth from this initial damage, but they can help prevent further damage by strengthening the tooth and reducing any sensitivity.
Inlays are often made with a composite insert that can usually be applied in just one appointment.
Unlike an inlay that repairs and restores the interior of a tooth, an onlay is used to repair the exterior of a tooth – what is often called the ‘cusp’, which is the most visible part of the tooth. It will be designed and constructed to recreate the shape of the natural tooth and bonded to the exterior of the tooth. This helps strengthen the existing tooth while restoring it to full function.
Onlays are made off site in a specialist dental laboratory, and so usually take two appointments to be completed.
Inlays and onlays are both designed to be subtle and unobtrusive, and to fit in with the rest of your teeth so they should not be noticeable.Back to General Dentistry
